This church is located on the edge of Ravenna’s old city. Inside, it houses the largest series of mosaics in the world, depicting a number of stunning scenes. One sequence features a procession of 16 saints on both sides of the nave—it’s truly remarkable to see the drapery folds rendered so precisely in mosaic.
On the left side, there’s a procession of 22 virgins from the Byzantine era, led by the Three Magi, moving from the city of Classe toward a group featuring the Madonna and Child, surrounded by four angels.
Also notable is the mosaic of the ancient port city of Classe, of which only ruins remain today.
