A true mosaic masterpiece and a unique architectural gem! Anyone entering the 6th-century Church of San Vitale—octagonal in shape and lacking the traditional long nave typical of most basilicas—immediately senses they’ve arrived at an inspiring place. The modest exterior gives no hint of the explosion of color, figures, stories, and intricate decorations inside, earning it the nickname: “The Wonder of Ravenna.”

At the center of the eastern apse, there’s a striking depiction of Emperor Justinian alongside Saint Maximian, surrounded by biblical scenes. On the ceiling, Christ the Ruler is shown seated atop a deep blue celestial sphere, with Saint Vitalis at his side.
