The Jewish Ghetto and Cemetery

tel: +39-0532 751337

Address: 6, Via delle Vigne, 12, 44121 Ferrara

This is a site of significant historical and cultural importance. Ferrara was home to a large and thriving Jewish community, traces of which can still be found today—and partly explored through the writings of author, poet, and philosopher Giorgio Bassani (The Garden of the Finzi-Continis). In the ghetto area, the synagogue and Jewish Museum still stand, and not far from there is the Jewish cemetery. Although it is not well maintained, the sight of Jewish tombstones bearing symbols like the Star of David and the menorah—especially the grave of Giorgio Bassani and the memorial in his honor—evoke a unique and moving atmosphere.
