It may come as no surprise, but Bologna also has several water canals that were built hundreds of years ago to bring water from the Apennine Mountains into the city — not only for water supply but also for transporting goods and generating energy.

The canals were constructed on a slope so that the power of the flowing water could be used to operate flour mills.

Several of these canals still exist today, although they are almost entirely hidden beneath the modern urban infrastructure.
