The Blue Grotto is one of the island’s top attractions. Although access to it is not easy and often requires a long wait due to high demand, the stunning blue color experience upon entering makes it worthwhile. It is located on the northern side of the island and can be reached by boats departing from Marina Grande, or by taking a bus that circles the island (via Anacapri). Entrance requires a fee and is done by small rowboats (up to 4 people) operated by local boatmen. Some of the boatmen even sing “’O Sole Mio” (not always pleasant to the ear…). Upon entering, visitors must duck, which explains why access to the grotto is only possible in good weather and without high tide. If there are waves, the entrance is closed. Inside, you can see sunlight passing through an underwater cavity, shining on the sea water and creating a blue reflection that illuminates the grotto.
