Piazza delle Erbe and Piazza della Frutta

tel: +39-049 201 0080

Address: Piazza della Frutta, 36, 35100

These two squares, located on either side of the Palazzo della Ragione, reflect the daily life of the city as it was centuries ago. In the Square of Herbs (Piazza delle Erbe) and the Square of Fruit (Piazza della Frutta), stalls once stood offering the finest goods brought in from the countryside. Occasionally, their names were changed to reflect new trends — for example, Piazza del Vino (Wine Square). Today, fruits are still sold in the square, along with clothing.

Between the two squares is a covered passageway known as the Volto della Corda — named for the place where cheaters and thieves caught in the act were tied up. Another notable spot is the Canton delle Busie (“Corner of Lies”), where measurement marks are still visible on the walls, allowing customers to verify that vendors were not cheating them.
