The main square of Belluno. In the past, it served as a meat market and a gathering place for soldiers before heading out on missions, due to its proximity to the city walls located just south of the square. Its shape is oval, and its name, “Square of the Martyrs,” originates from a tragic event in 1945, when four young partisans were shot to death by Nazi soldiers. On the northern side of the square is the Portico—a covered walkway—where locals enjoy strolling. There you’ll also find the Church of San Rocco, named after the saint who saved the city from a plague in the 16th century. Next to the church and surrounding the square are buildings from different periods, together creating a pleasant harmony that invites visitors to pause for a coffee break.
