Address: Prato della Valle, 35123

An elliptical square covering 90,000 square meters, Prato della Valle is the largest square in Italy and one of the largest in Europe. Today, it is a vast open space featuring a central green island—l’Isola Memmia—surrounded by a small canal bordered by two rings of statues.

In the 17th century, a group of Venetian nobles funded the construction of a theater on the site, intended for reenacting horseback battles. A century later, excavations revealed the remains of an ancient Roman theater. From its early days, the square captured the hearts of the city’s residents, who often refer to it simply as “Il Prato.”

Access to the island, which is encircled by a 1.5 km canal, is provided by four bridges. The square is adorned with an impressive collection of 78 statues commemorating notable citizens. In the summer, Prato della Valle comes to life with crowds of visitors who enjoy skating, strolling, studying, or even sunbathing.
