The Walls and Waterways – Le Mura e i Corsi d’acqua

Address: Riviera Garibaldi 31100

Treviso is an ancient city that, from its earliest days, was surrounded by walls. To this defensive structure were added water canals, which served as an additional obstacle for anyone attempting to attack the city. Remnants of the walls can still be seen and visited today, and above the three city gates, the symbol of Venice—the winged lion—can still be seen.

Treviso was always an important city of the Venetian Republic and was referred to as “La terra ferma” – “the mainland.” You can walk along the walls and enjoy public gardens, villas overlooking the canals, and stop at Ponte Dante (Dante Bridge), which was mentioned in Dante’s Divine Comedy. The bridge is also known as the “Impossible Bridge”, as locals believed it too would one day collapse, like the other wooden bridges before it.
