Vernazza has a medieval appearance, with arched alleyways, elegant arcades, houses with narrow passages between them, and a very small harbor that, in the past, was actually bustling and busy—a first docking point for boats and warriors arriving to defend the area from Saracen attacks. It can be reached by train or by sea. The town is crowded and full of tourists from around the world during the summer months, and it’s highly recommended as a spot for a lunch break. It’s also worth visiting the local church, Santa Margherita di Antiochia, or climbing up to Castello Doria, whose walls are carved into the cliffside. And for those who simply want to enjoy the warm sun by the sea, the boat dock is a perfect place to relax with a glass of juice or a good gelato.
