The amazing palace was built in 1777 by the Italian architect Giuseppe Piermarini, who was highly regarded at the courts of the Habsburgs and the House of Savoy. He drew inspiration from the Palace of Caserta in the south, which had been built by his teacher Vanvitelli.
The palace was commissioned by Maria Theresa, Empress of Austria, for her son Ferdinand of Habsburg. Monza was chosen due to its strategic location between Milan and Vienna and its stunning scenery. The palace was constructed in the Neoclassical style.
Inside, visitors can see large reception halls, a small theater, an intimate circular reception hall (the only one of its shape in the complex), and a tiny chapel rich in special stucco decorations.
