One of the most impressive squares in Italy, dating back to the time when Perugia was an independent commune. At the center of the square stands the “Great Fountain” (Fontana Maggiore), surrounded by historic buildings such as the Duomo and the Palazzo dei Priori (home to the National Gallery of Umbria).
The Fontana Maggiore, built in 1278 by father and son Nicola and Giovanni Pisano, is sculpted with reliefs representing the months of the year, male and female figures symbolizing the arts and sciences, Aesop’s fables, astrological symbols, as well as biblical figures. A female figure on the upper basin facing Corso Vannucci, holding a fruit symbolizing fertility, is a symbol of the city. Its name, of course, is Perugia.
