Mausoleum of Galla Placidia (Mausoleo di Galla Placidia)

tel: +39-0544 541688

Address: Via San Vitale, 17, 48121 Ravenna

This stunning tomb was dedicated to Galla Placidia, although she is not actually buried there. Placidia was the daughter of Theodosius I and his second wife, Galla, and the half-sister of Emperors Honorius and Arcadius.

Dim light filters into the space, illuminating some of the oldest and most breathtaking mosaics in the city. Among them, you can see Christ as the Good Shepherd, surrounded by his apostles. These mosaics were created shortly after the capital of the Western Roman Empire moved from Milan to Ravenna in the 5th century CE.

Above the walls, a sky of deep blue filled with golden stars stretches across the ceiling, leaving visitors awestruck by its beauty.
