Fontana del Nettuno

tel: +39-no

Address: Piazza del Nettuno, 40124 Bologna

The statue of Neptune is one of the city’s symbols. Its nickname, in the local dialect, is al Żigànt (the giant). The square where it stands is also named after him and is adjacent to Piazza Maggiore. The statue, built in the 16th century, is made of bronze and was commissioned from the famous sculptor Giambologna by representatives of the Pope who ruled the city. The god Neptune is depicted standing with a trident in his hand, reigning over the surroundings, and beneath him are four nymphs emerging from the water, casting glances at passersby. The trident inspired the logo of the Maserati car, manufactured in the Bologna area.
