Aperol spritz

One of the well-known aperitifs in Italy is the ‘Aperol Spritz.’

The aperitivo is a light alcoholic drink served before a meal.

Here are a few details to know about this unique orange-hued beverage:

1- Aperol (even before the spritz) is a drink that was born in Padua by the Barbieri brothers in the 1920s.

2- Aperol is a beverage made from herbs, various roots, hints of orange, and bitter peels. Yes, the bitterness is noticeable…

3- Spritz is an Austrian concept that soldiers used in World War I to give wine a bit more ‘length’ by adding sparkling water. In German, the word is spritzen, hence spritz (or in Italian, spritz).

4- The combination of the two, Aperol and spritz, became popular in the mid-1920s in Padua and Venice. By the 1970s, it was common throughout Italy.

5- Since 2011, it has become an official drink with the IBA seal, the International Bartenders Association.

6- The cocktail consists of one-third Aperol, one-third Prosecco, one-third soda, an orange slice, and sometimes a beautiful olive that dives into the glass. In some areas, the proportions of each ingredient vary.

7- The drink is also known with the addition of Campari or Select (a Venetian drink) instead of Aperol.

8- It is customary to serve some snacks alongside the drink – potato chips, peanuts, or something similar.

9- You can buy a bottle of Aperol at any supermarket and prepare it independently at home. From experience – it’s excellent for the Israeli heat. But you also need to get prosecco.

10- Recommended for afternoon drinking, on a hot day, between work and returning home, in any bar, with a beautiful view, or a special café, and if possible with your loved one by your side.

Salute!
