Lake Garda Family Travel – The Ultimate Itinerary for a Perfect Trip

Lake Garda for Families

Lake Garda is one of the most popular destinations in Italy for families with children. Let’s start with the fact that it’s simply beautiful! Now add all the other advantages like: amusement parks for the whole family, turquoise lakes perfect for swimming, rope parks for hours of challenges, nature hiking trails, charming towns to explore, and a wealth of accommodation options, ranging from local guesthouses to family hotels and camping sites for families.

Lake Garda spans three provinces: Veneto, Trentino Alto Adige, and Lombardy, and it’s easy to reach from Verona, Venice, or Milan.

To make sure you don’t miss anything, Alura offers you a family-friendly tour around Lake Garda, which you can enjoy during the upcoming Passover holiday and summer, creating an unforgettable Italian experience for both kids and parents!

Lake Garda for Families – Important to Know

Accommodation:

Although the area around Lake Garda is quite large, we recommend a “star” trip. Settle in one of the family hotels or resorts and take daily excursions to various sites. A convenient location would be around the southern part of the lake, due to its proximity to parks and the A4 highway connecting Venice in the east to Milan in the west. A week-long trip would be perfect.

 How to Get Around?

The easiest way is by rental car, but be aware of traffic congestion during the summer months of July and August. Not all places can be reached via direct public transport, which is quite critical when traveling with children.

Day 1: Northern Italy + Visit to Sirmione

Based on your flight schedules and arrival at the selected hotel.

If you arrive in the morning, have dropped off your luggage at the hotel, and perhaps managed to rest a bit (assuming you didn’t sleep well the previous night), head out to the picturesque town of Sirmione Sirmione.

Right at the entrance of the town, you can take a motorboat around the peninsula. An exciting experience for the whole family! Afterwards, explore the town dominated by a medieval castle. You can even enter and climb the tower (for a fee) for a panoramic view of the entire area. Once inside, stroll through the charming narrow streets and treat yourself to a true Italian gelato. If the weather is warm and you want to swim in the lake’s waters, there are equipped beaches, two on the eastern side, and one at the northern tip. The first and closest to the town center is Spiaggia del Prete (with restrooms available). The second, farther and almost at the end of the peninsula, is Spiaggia Lido delle Bionde. The third beach is unique because you can enjoy the thermal waters that rise from the bottom of the lake – Jamaica Beach (if you take a boat to circumnavigate the island, you can see it).

A truly impressive sight!

Day 2: Gardaland – Amusement Park

A day dedicated to Italy’s largest amusement park – Gardaland Gardaland, a continuous experience filled with breathtaking rides and special shows. Thrills await in the new attraction “Raptor”, navigation on the ride “Poseidon”, loops on “Tornado Blu”, inverted roller coasters, and white-water rafting at the foot of the volcano, and so much more. Little ones can enjoy the special “Kids’ World” within the park. Between attractions, there are shows, 3D movies, and more. In the evening, we’ll return to the hotel with wide smiles on our faces.

It is recommended to book tickets in advance to avoid long lines at the ticket booth. Note that children under 1 meter tall do not pay.

Before heading to the park, download on your mobile the Gardaland app that will help you plan your route according to wait times at the attractions and provide a map and location: https://www.gardaland.it/en/useful-information/useful-services/gardaland-app/

Day 3: Lake Garda: Varone Waterfalls – Lake Tenno – Riva del Garda + Navigation – Malcesine

A day of exploration in the north of Lake Garda. Bring your swimsuits and towels and head north to Lake Tenno – Lake Tenno, “the hidden lake” amidst the mountains with waters of an intense turquoise blue (free entry and swimming available on-site). From there, visit the spectacular Varone Waterfalls Cascate del Varone (entrance fee applies) a natural wonder where the water crashes against the rocks creating waterfalls. There are picnic tables and restrooms in the area. From there, a short trip takes you to the lovely town of Riva del Garda, from which you can navigate on the lake to the beautiful Limone. Stroll through the picturesque streets filled with lemon and limoncello shops, then head back south along the SS249 road that runs alongside the lake. Stop at the town of Malcesine overlooking the lake. From this town, a cable car takes you to Monte Baldo Cable car Malcesine – Monte Baldo which rises to an altitude of 1,800 meters, offering a spectacular view of Lake Garda. Enchanting!!

Day 4: Water Park CANEVAWORLD – Movie World MOVIELAND – Dinner and Knight Show

A day of fun at a trio of nearby parks where a combined ticket can be purchased. We start the day at the water park Caneva Aquapark. Within the park, there are attractions and pools for all ages, from rocket slides, dark rafting, to relaxed rafting in the large pool. In the afternoon, you change and move to the adjoining park for a Hollywood experience in Movie World Movieland – The Hollywood Park. This park features amusement park rides and outdoor shows. You can see how action movies are made and watch the stunt show of Rambo!

In the evening, we head to the third area to see a medieval-style knight show, where four knights compete for the heart of the king’s daughter while riding horses. Each receives a crown of a different color and encourages their knight loudly. The show includes a dinner that is eaten with your hands!

Day 5: Venice – The City of Canals

A day dedicated to the city of canals, Venice. Keep in mind that there is no access for cars within Venice. There are parking places where you can leave your car, and the city tour is done on foot or by water bus. You can also reach Venice by direct train.

From the train station, embark on a walking tour through the old ghetto and the new ghetto, passing over the Rialto Bridge which connects both sides of the Grand Canal, and of course, Piazza San Marco. One of the most beautiful experiences is the gondola ride, the most representative means of transport in the city. In Saint Mark’s Square, you can take the elevator to the bell tower and enjoy a view over the entire city.

Day 6: The Dolomites: Rafting – Roller Coasters

Even though it’s not Lake Garda, it’s still an experience worth the trip to the Dolomites. Suitable for families who enjoy a bit of adventurous activity and for children from the age of 5.

The Dolomites lie on the border between Italy and Austria and were part of Austria for many years, which has left its architecture, culture, and language within them. We remain in Italy, while still feeling like we’re in Austria. The landscapes are breathtaking and there’s nothing better than an exciting, adrenaline-rich water experience – rafting (weather permitting) on one of the rushing rivers. Afterwards, you can continue and take the cable car to one of the peaks, where in summer, there are attractions for children, such as self-driven roller coasters .

    • Important note: Adequate insurance is recommended for level 3 rafting.

Day 7: Adventure Park – Picnic at Sigurtà Park – Verona

Around Lake Garda, you’ll find adventure and ropes parks, such as Jungle Adventure Park for adventurous activities that include experiences with high-altitude obstacle courses among the trees. The action is thrilling – you climb, swing, crawl, dangle, and play – all on ropes. Swings, zip lines, climbing nets, suspended adventurous passages, rope bridges. Suitable for youth and adults. Continue south along the Minciò River (which drains Lake Garda) to the Sigurtà Botanical Garden Parco Giardino Sigurtà, where you can picnic on the lawns (there are also tables and benches), and due to the size of the park, you can rent self-driven golf carts. There’s a hedge maze where the children can get lost.

Your journey will conclude in Verona – the Shakespearean capital of lovers. In the heart of the city is the famous Roman Arena which hosts concerts and operas every summer from all over the world. Enjoy a pleasant stroll through historic squares and streets to Juliet’s house, where you can see the balcony where she awaited Romeo, and the culture of graffiti and messages from local lovers. The city is filled with cafes and shops, and this is a perfect way to end an intense week.
