The main entrance to the city, this gate was originally part of a Franciscan monastery—hence its name. It was built in 1361 and underwent renovations in 1451.
After passing through it (along with the ever-present guard who directs visitors toward the city center), a staircase on the right leads up to a small section of the wall, offering a view of the city’s rooftops, all uniform in color. Turning left onto Contrada della Mura street provides a scenic view of the surrounding mountains.
Continuing straight ahead begins the ascent into the heart of San Marino’s old town.
